John Koza’s Invention Machine can design lenses and antennas that meet complex sets of requirements. The potential of genetic-algorithm-aided design is huge, in that it allows us to explore a much large space of possibilities.

Apple patent on virtual surround sound. Imagine an iPod Hi-Fi that would instantly provide surround sound when you placed it in a room.
FLAT is an innovative hydraulic system that allows stability on uneven surfaces. My guess is that it’s probably too expensive or fragile for cafe tables, but it certainly has potential applications in other areas.
