Global Warming Attribution

Global warming attribution, or how scientists figure out whether global warming is a natural phenomenon or whether we are causing it.

New LED lightbulbs

These new LED lightbulbs emit a light similar in spectrum to sunlight, and are more energy efficient than regular lightbulbs. And they were discovered by accident, as a by-product of research on quantum dots. What more can you ask for?

Octopi simulate jointed limbs

Octopi are really cool: apparently they can contract their tentacles so as to simulate a jointed limb. Most interesting comment of the article:

It also suggests that articulated limbs with joints may be the best evolutionary solution for such motion, the researchers argue. After all, the flexible octopus has unlimited options for that movement.

Scientific brain linked to autism. James Watson, who co-discovered the double-helix shape of the DNA molecule, came to speak at Google the other day and mentioned Baron-Cohen’s research. Watson is working on figuring out possible genetic causes to autism.

My friend Diede posts about Scientific Cafes, the science equivalent of slam poetry [use bugMeNot to bypass registration].

Apparently, you can now patent scientific facts. That’s just insane – can we please have patent reform sometime soon?

Why is it that steroids are forbidden but laser eye-surgery is allowed? Both have dramatic effects on a player’s performance. Interesting issue raised by Steven Johnson, whose books Mind Wind Open and Emergence I highly recommend.
