An absolutely fascinating article on the economic organization of a Prisoner of War Camp. More recently, the WSJ covered mackerel economics in prison.

I was fascinated by the prison’s switch from a “gold” standard (cigarettes, which have intrinsic value) to a fiat currency (macks, which don’t), and how that paralleled the real-world development of 30 years earlier (Nixon taking the US off of the gold standard).
